Tarek Maassarani is passionate about orienting the inner-self, communities, and institutions towards mutual liberation and transformation on the basis of self-reflection, empathy, critical awareness, and strategic nonviolence. He currently contributes to capacity building, networking, and program development around the integration of restorative justice, primarily, in Washington D.C.

He has a decade of experience in mediation, dialogue facilitation, community building, peace education, Nonviolent Communication, leadership, and conflict resolution training for educators, organizations, law enforcement and military, youth, and families.

Tarek served as a legal services, human rights, and investigative public interest attorney. He published on corporate whistleblowing, the suppression of climate science, and international human rights. He produced a documentary film on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, co-founded an intentional community and carried out educational, peacebuilding, and community development projects in Africa and the Middle East.

Tarek has taught at American, Georgetown, George Washington and Johns Hopkins University, as well as the National Peace Academy and the U.S. Institute of Peace.  He holds a Masters in International Affairs from Columbia University, a J.D. from Georgetown University, as well as a B.S. in Environmental Studies and B.A. in Cultural Anthropology from the University of California, Santa Barbara. Tarek has two sons and hails from a multi-lingual/cultural/religious family.
